To assess the condition of the teeth, gums, mucous membrane and oral cavity as a whole, doctors use such methods as percussion, palpation, probing, determination of mobility, etc.
First, the doctor will examine the general condition of the jaw with closed teeth. By lifting the relaxed lower and upper lip with a dental mirror, as well as slightly pulling back the cheek, you can examine the front of the mouth, determine the presence of a red border, problems in the corners, and the location of the upper and lower frenulum. Attention is also paid to the condition of the lips, their peeling, the appearance of scales or hard crusts.
A preventive examination of the oral cavity is an examination of the mucous membrane on the inner surface of the cheeks. Diagnosis of the color, consistency and amount of saliva, as well as the nature of the bite (ratio of the tooth rows).
The next stage is the diagnosis of the condition of the gums and tongue. Their color should normally be pale pink, and the surface should be smooth, without ulcers and damage. The dentist will determine the appearance of pathological changes in the gums, as well as the presence and depth of periodontal pockets. Special attention is paid to complaints of increased sensitivity of the tongue and pain.
